Boring Debate

The debate was so boring. Where are the good, old days of candidates screaming at each other and vehemently defending his position? These polite exchanges don't allow for us to see how a person will react when goaded and under stress. I want to see the candidates push each other's buttons and engage one another. Oh, well, such is the price of political correctness. Rudeness is not allowed; neither is truth.

Which Terrorist are our enemies?

Orson Scott Card (a science fiction/fantasy author of the highest caliber) writes a weekly opinion piece for his local newspaper. He then publishes that piece to his web a couple of weeks later. Card is a long-time democrat, opining along the same vein as Zell Miller. He is not a socialist and not a liberal, but a moderate, well reasoned democrat. Very rarely do I find myself disagreeing with him.

This week's opinion is no exception. He brilliantly writes that to win the war on terrorism, there can be no distinction between international terrorists and local terrorists. As our President criticizes Putin for his reaction to the Chechan terrorists (which I think is a mistake on Bush's part) we see why it is important for us to channel our resources to destroy all terrorism.

Iraq had no nuclear weapons

The former head of Saddam Hussein's nuclear weapons program details some of the history of Iraq's struggle for nuclear weapons. He talks about the fact that right before the war against Iraq there was no nuclear program, but does explains how it was very legitimate for the west to believe Saddam still had nukes. He ends by saying the nuclear program could have been reconstituted at any time with very little problem and opines why that is dangerous and how America needs to handle this situation.

Legitimate War

Many people in the media and on the Left attempt to paint the battle in Iraq as a "red herring" in the War on Terror. Depending on how partisan the person is, they may charge Bush with anything from fabricating reasons to initiate a war in Iraq to relying on faulty documents that he used to make arguments to the American people so as to gain approval for a war. They tend to believe that the war in Iraq is either nothing more than a personal vendetta or a way to line the pockets of his friends. No matter what they use as the reason for Bush wanting to go to war with Iraq or how he got there, they have an underlying position that the war in Iraq is illegitimate.

There are several misleading statements that they use to justify this position and they repeatedly state them as if they are fact. I heard Jesse Jackson making these same misstatements on the Sean Hannity Radio Show yesterday and was surprised the Hannity did not rebut them. However, I have been working on a long blog to counter each of these arguments but have not posted it because all of my research was not done. However, my brother called me yesterday seeking some information and I thought he could use this post. So, I will make a feeble attempt to fill the role of both Adam and Jamie and bust these myths.

Myth # 1: The Battle in Iraq is part of a Republican Agenda
The official foreign policy of the US concerning Iraq has been "transition to democracy" since 1998 when President Clinton signed the 1998 Iraqi Liberation Act. This policy did not change with the Bush Administration. Prior to election year politics the necessity of regime change in Iraq was a rare point of agreement between the two parties, as made clear by the October 2002 vote authorizing the president to use force against Iraq (supported by 29 Democratic Senators and 126 Democratic Representatives).

Myth #2: Iraq was billed as an imminent threat to U.S. security
In the President's 2003 State of the Union Address he actually makes it very clear that the threat from Iraq is not imminent:
"Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike? If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words, and all recriminations would come too late."
The President did not say the threat was imminent, but instead made a case that to wait until the threat was imminent was to wait too long. This is wise thinking that agrees with such proverbs as "A stitch in time saves nine" and "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Myth #3: Bush lied about Saddam seeking yellowcake uranium from Niger
While I am talking about the President's 2003 State of the Union Address I best deal with this myth. First, let me be clear about what I call a lie. A lie is a statement that one knows to be false at the time the statement is made. It is not, for instance, a lie to wake up in the morning, roll over and say to your spouse, "It is sunny today," when in fact it is overcast. However, if you wake up, open the backdoor, see that it is overcast and then go say to your spouse, "It is sunny today," you have lied. A careful examination of those words show that they were indeed true at the time Bush spoke them.
"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought
significant quantities of uranium from Africa."
In July 2003 (after the controversy erupted) British intelligence services and Tony Blair were firmly standing by their assertion of the Iraq-Niger connection. In case that is not enough, it is important to note that the bipartisan-prepared 9/11 Commission Report cites several credible pieces of intelligence affirming the link, including reports from a foreign service and the U.S. Navy about uranium from Niger headed for Iraq and stored in a warehouse in Benin.

Myth #4: There is no tie between Saddam Hussein and Al-Qaeda
Before I get started debunking this myth it is important to note that the Bush administration never claimed Saddam Hussein had any hand in planning the 9/11 attacks. However, we are not in a war against those who attacked us on 9/11; we are in a War against Terror. The attacks on the WTC were just an excursion from one company of terrorists.

Just saying that there was no connection between al-Qaeda and Iraq does not make it so. When one looks at the facts, one must draw the conclusion that Saddam engaged in the supporting of terrorist. Here are just a very few documented examples of Saddam's terroristic efforts:

Stephen Hayes, the author of a book called The Connection makes a very convincing case for connections between Saddam and terrorists. The book is overflowing with footnotes and references to his sources that include Iraqi intelligence documents, confessions of Iraqi intelligence personnel, intercepted telephone conversations, allegations of counterterrorism officials in the Clinton administration, and even satellite photographs. It is my opinion that only partisans can outright dismiss the al-Qaeda/Saddam link after reading his book.

Myth #5: No WMDs have been found
This is pretty easy to disprove, either weapons have been found or they haven't. If this debate were not so partisan, then a few news articles showing the discovery of WMDs would put this to argument down. Before we look at articles, it is imperative that an agreement on what constitutes a WMD is reached. This report by FoxNews provides a concise overview. Now, here is a summary of what has been discovered in Iraq:

  1. Chemical and biological weapon systems plans and equipment
  2. Reference strains of biological weapons agents
  3. New research on brucella and congo-crimean hemorrhagic fever, and continuing work on ricin and aflatoxin
  4. A biological weapons lab
  5. Polish troops in Iraq uncovered warheads containing Cyclosarin, an agent far more toxic than Sarin. (These were old and degraded and probably would not have been a threat, but were still illegal under the terms of Kuwait Surrender for Saddam to have)
  6. Prohibited long-range missiles suitable for delivering WMDs
  7. Documents showing Saddam tried to obtain long-range ballistic missiles from North Korea
  8. 10 to 12 sarin and mustard gas shells have been found in various locations in Iraq
  9. Gas centrifuge elements for enriching uranium, parts of a nuclear weapons program, buried in the back yard of Mahdi Obeidi, a nuclear scientist. Obeidi also gave up nuclear development documents and said there were other pieces of the puzzle hidden elsewhere.
  10. A barrel of enriched uranium found near Mosul.
  11. Iraq was 3 years from a building a nuclear weapon, according to top nuclear scientists quoted by CNN.
  12. In May 2004, the Iraq Survey Group, the people who are searching for WMD, confirmed that a roadside bomb detonated was also packed with Sarin nerve agent. That bomb was one 550, for which Saddam Hussein failed to account prior to the war. The article also points out that Hans Blix reported that his inspection team found 16 empty, Iraqi warheads marked for use with Sarin prior to the start of the war.
  13. In October 2003, Kuwaiti security forces intercepted Iraqis attempting to smuggle $60 million worth of chemical weapons and biological warheads to an unnamed European country
  14. On January 16, 2003, UN weapons inspectors discovered 11 rocket warheads designed to deliver chemical weapons in a bunker 75 miles south of Baghdad.
  15. Chief Weapons Inspector David Kay reported "dozens of WMD-related program activities and significant amounts of equipment that Iraq concealed from the United Nations during the inspections that began in late 2002," including vials of live botulinum bacteria that were found hidden at the home of an Iraqi scientist. Botulinum is the single most poisonous substance known to mankind.
  16. Kay's final report reveals Iraq's attempt to "revive its efforts to develop nuclear weapons in 2000 and 2001," and that "Baghdad was actively working to produce a biological weapon using the poison ricin."
  17. Kay successor Charles Duelfer reported on March 30, 2004: "Iraq did have facilities suitable for the production of biological and chemical agents needed for weapons. It had plans to improve and expand and even build new facilities." Iraq was also working up to March 2003 to construct new facilities for the large-scale production of dual-use chemicals.
  18. According to former Justice Dept prosecutor John Loftus, "The CIA has found 41 different material breaches where Saddam did have a weapons of mass destruction program."
  19. "We know from some of the interrogations of former Iraqi officials that a lot of material went to Syria before the war, including some components of Saddam's WMD" - David Kay, who also told the Associated Press that satellites showed "a lot of traffic" from Iraq to Syria
  20. A Syrian journalist who defected to Paris in January has named three sites in Syria where Iraqi WMDs are buried, based on contacts of his in Syrian Intelligence. Israeli intelligence has confirmed his account
  21. An Iraqi scientist told American weapons experts that Iraq had secretly sent unconventional weapons and technology to Syria just before the war, according to the New York Times
  22. Jordan recently seized 20 tons of chemicals trucked in by confessed al Qaeda members who brought the stuff in from Syria. The chemicals included VX, Sarin and 70 others

When Saddam surrendered and signed the papers he agreed to surrender all chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons to UN monitors. But inspector David Kay has testified that the Iraqi regime violated UN Resolution 1441, by finding new ways to sidestep its provisions. Saddam's enduring evasiveness, coupled with an aggressive last-ditch bid to cover up its militaristic aims by barring international inspectors from sensitive sites, kept inspectors from discovering Iraq's illegal missile programs.

Myth 6: America is fighting the war in Iraq alone
Three-dozen countries are currently contributing military forces to the country, and several creditor nations have forgiven Iraqi debt and pledged reconstruction funds. President Bush listed out many of our allies in this war in State of the Union Speech.

"Some critics have said our duties in Iraq must be internationalized. This
particular criticism is hard to explain to our partners in Britain, Australia,
Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Poland, Denmark,
Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, the Netherlands -- (applause) -- Norway, El
Salvador, and the 17 other countries that have committed troops to Iraq.
(Applause.) As we debate at home, we must never ignore the vital contributions
of our international partners, or dismiss their sacrifices."

So, we have allies but it is an illegitimate coalition because the UN did not give us permission to fight this war is the follow-up argument. I don't buy this argument because getting permission from the UN would put our ability to defend ourselves in the hands of Kofi Annan and an organization where "free" countries can be paid off, the voice of a dictator is equal to the voice of freedom, and our enemies have a vote. This does not make sense.

Myth 7: We are more susceptible to terrorism today because of the War in Iraq
I wrote a blog entry about this back April about the fact that we are winning the war on Terror and are safer than ever. No use rewriting that one.

Conclusion
Wow! This is long. I figure most people won't get this far. However, I think I've made some compelling arguments and rebuttals for the myths. My brother used to be against the war in Iraq but has become convinced otherwise because of entries on my blog. Something in my chain of thoughts changed his mind, so I've included a little index of all my entries dealing with the war Iraq in chronological order just as he would have read them.

Great Quote

During Bible class this eventing the administrator at Erin's school recited a quote that he had heard at an Administrator's Conference.
Parents used want you (schools) to prepare thier children for the road ahead. Now they want you to change the road.
I found this to be a very insightful commentary on our culture. However, things may be Changing. According to the Orgeonan, GenXers are setting more boundries for thier children than the Boomers did.

Iran to continue exploring atomic energy alternatives

  • Let's see, one of the countries in the Axis of Evil, that sits on one of the largest reservoirs of oil needs to continue its nuclear program. However, they say, don't worry, we are not building weapons. Yeah, right.
  • I wonder if anyone will condemn them for acting unilaterally without UN permission? Probably not.
  • The fact is Iran is not afraid of repercussions of this decision because the political process here in the US has demonized our effort in Iraq to the extent that the American people no longer have the resolve to protect ourselves. The Democrats and the media have successfully taken away Bush's ability to use the fear of force to ensure that Iran does not build nuclear weapons.
  • Not a good investment plan: Everyone who trusts Iran to not build weapons and only use the technology for energy purposes, please send me $1.

Not those world leaders

This past weekend Dennis Hastert (R- IL) opined that Al Qaeda would be more comfortable with a Kerry administration than a Bush administration. This, of course, prompted criticism of Hastert by the Kerry\Edwards campaign.

Many months ago Kerry proclaimed that some world leaders wanted him to win this election, but refused to say which ones. Now, that someone has actually provided a name of some world leaders that might want Kerry to win, they get all excited and disparage the statement.

I think everyone would agree that Kerry appears to be softer on terrorists than Bush. Most people would agree that the terrorists would want the person who is a less of a threat to them to win, ergo, they would want Kerry to win. However, that line of thinking requires logic and common sense. That will prevent most liberals from reaching that same conclusion.

Hurricane Coming

The Hurricane is coming! The Hurrican is coming!

So, we are closing up shop at noon today and will be closed until Monday. Man, I just love being a govt. worker!!!

Anyway, Erin and I already had plans to travel home to St. Louis for the weekend to go on our annual Apple Picking excursion. Instead of leaving on Friday and making a whirlwind trip, we have decided that we are going to leave today when she gets out of school (her school has canceled classes tomorrow and possible Friday). Get away from all these crazies. Everyone is freaking out up here. You can't buy any water, ice, batteries, flashlights, or candles. Wal-Mart is overrun with myrmidons. I don't really understand it. We are 200 miles inland. We will get some wind and some rain. Nothing that is unusual for a summer in Alabama.

Well, gotta go. We are backing up systems and prepping to take them offline for the weekend.

Cash Line Only

Erin (die Frau) asked me to stop by the store on my way home to pick up a can of tomato sauce to be used in the preparation of dinner. Not a big deal. Since we follow the principles taught by Dave Ramsey, we have an envelope with cash in it labeled grocery. Prior to following the envelope system I rarely carried cash and was a debit card king; I would pay with my debit card for a grocery bill under $1. Anyway, since going to cash for groceries and other items, I have found that paying with cash is much faster than a debit card...and I like that. I am always in a hurry.

So, I am in the store and ready to check out with my 1 can of Tomato sauce. There are 5 lanes open (we live in a rural town in Alabama...and the store I go to doesn't have a self-checkout system...one of the stores does have it but I don't like the store and have really found the self checkout to be more laborious and slow than a checkout person). Three of the lanes have people with full grocery carts, one lane has 6 people with an average of 5 items each, and the remaining lane has 1 gentleman (Person A) whose last item is being scanned and another guy (Person B) with 1 item. BINGO! I hop in that lane.

Well, the clerk tells Person A his total. He then reaches in suit jacket and pulls out his checkbook and begins to write his check. I hate check writers...it takes such a long time. This man, though, must have been the most meticulous check writer ever though. He was making slow and deliberate motions. I was thinking to myself, "IT IS A STINKIN' CHECK...NOT THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. WE DON'T NEED CURLY LETTERS AND CALLIGRAPHY!!!!!" Of course, then, he doens't have his driver's licensce out, so he has to pull that out and have the clerk write all that info down. grrrrrr.

Finally, Person B steps up to pay. The clerk scans his one item. He is an old man and decides to try out this new-fangled debit card system for the first time. The clerk tells him to scan his card in reader and punch in his PIN. He scans it the card the wrong way. He turns it around and scans it the correct way. He pushes the wrong button (the credit button instead of the debit). He has to start over. He gets to the point where he needs to type in his PIN. He doesn't know his PIN so he has to rifle through his wallet to find his PIN. He punches it in. An error occured and we had to start over. He finally gets it correct. The clerk asks, "Would you like any cash back?" The man doesn't know. He gets a lesson about how he can get cash back with his debit card. He wonders why anyone would want to cash back. The clerk talks to him about saving ATM fees. I am fuming. He decides he doesn't want cash back. She tells him to click OK to accept the charge. He hits the NO button. We begin again... He finally gets it all right and as he is given his reciept, I notice the red edge on it. Yes, we have to have a reciept tape change....

Finally, my turn. I get my one item scanned. Hand the clerk two-one dollar bills. I am done. Meanwhile, all three full carts have completed thier processing and are out the door. The lane with 6 people has allowed all 6 people that I would've been behind, plus 4 other people through.

Erin said God was giving me a patience lesson. I think though, that we need a line just for cash only purchases of 15 items or less.

US Airway Declares Bankruptcy...My Retirement OK

When I heard that US Airways had declared Bankruptcy, I was a little worried how much that would mean I would lose in my retirement fund.

See, I pay into the Alabama Teacher's Retirement System and knew that we invest heavily in this company. Our chief executive officer of the fund (David Bonner) is actually the chairman of the board for US Airways because we have controlling interest.

Anyway, Forbes says our fundis still in good shape and can withstand this setback. Yeah.

Gore: Bush faith akin to fundamentalist Islam

WorldNetDaily is reporting that Al Gore has compared the Christian faith of Bush as being in the same vein as Islamic fundamentalist.

This is aburd. Sure, Bush is vocal about his faith and makes his decisions based on an eternal perspective, but he doesn't appeal to other Christians to seize a school, bayonet 18 month-old children, rape teen-age girls, and shoot school children in the back. Bush, and most mainstream Christians, find this kind of behavior deplorable and call it the evil that it so clearly is.

Sure, we expect some mud-slinging in political elections . Mud slinging has been a part of our politics since Jefferson ran against Adams (use BugMeNot.com to get it) in the 1800 election. However, this kind of character assassination and slander is simply out-of-line and uncalled for.
To murder character is as truly a crime as to murder the body: the tongue of the
slanderer is brother to the dagger of the assassin. (Tyron Edwards)

Obviously, the daggers and tongues are both unsheathed and ready for action, as the Democrats -- and their "mainstream" media mouthpieces -- are taking no prisoners. In today's world where the threat of Islamic terror is a real and viable comparing any American of any faith to those spawns of Satan shows a depraved mind. To compare the President to these demon filled minions of hatred almost traitorous.

Islamic Fascists who promote terror and the wanton killing of innocents just enrages me. It just makes me so mad that anyone would dismiss this evil by using them to sling some mud for political purposes. It is despicable.

A picture is worth a thousand words

Only a fool would not know what to call someone who shoots children in the back...

Lest we Misremember

Michelle Malkin's column is spectacular today. She says we must stop sanitizing the terrorists and remember what they have done. She then lists and recaps the atrocities of dozen incidents of terror committed by Islamic Fascists in the name of Allah. Great read!!!

Islamic Fanatics target School Children

So far the death toll stands at 338 hostages (156 are children) and 10 special forces soldiers. This number is expected to rise though with 58 people still in critical condition. Our hearts and our prayers are with them. May the God of Glory heal their broken bodies and may He pour out His wrath upon the perpetrators of this horrific event.

According to the Moscow Times, between Sept. 1-3 about 30 heavily armed terrorists seized a school in Beslan, near Chechnya, and held about 1,100 young school children, teachers, and parents hostage. When a bomb inside the school was apparently accidentally detonated, the hostages attempted to flee. The terrorists then set off more bombs and opened fire on the fleeing children (shooting some of them in the back) and adults.

What is carefully missing from many of the reports is that the Chechnyans are Sunni Muslims. The newspapers are trying to make it appear as if this attack was designed and implemented by a group of rebels as part of an internal fight for independence from Russia. However, with reports out that there were 10 Arab men with connections to Al-Qaida, one must see this event, then through the eyes of our War on Terror.

I have to wonder about people who think that these monsters can be reasoned with. Obviously anyone who shoots fleeing children in the back is unreasonable. Rational discourse will not dissuade them from their philosophy nor will it keep them at bay. Appeasement does not work either with people of this mind set. France has tried to the way of appeasement, and has failed. Russia withheld support for the US during the the Iraq invasion and still the terrorist strike them. So, what does stop this kind of behavior when appeasement and negations are removed as viable options? When dealing with fanatics who will display no restraint when fighting for their cause, the only sure way to stop them is to seek them out and kill them. The only thing they understand is the one thing the use, and that is brute force.

I continue to say that this is the single most important issue of our presidential election. I want to take that a step further today. The issue of Islamic Terrorism is the most important issue in Christianity today. This attack shows how evil Islam is. Only a religion that worships Satan could turn hearts cold enough to accept the killing of children. As I have said before, we are in the midst of a physical manifestation of a spiritual battle. Christians everywhere have a duty to get involved in this battle.

  1. We must see the spiritual battle that is going on around us. American Christianity has become so self-focused that we fail to understand that our God is global god. We look and will accept the spiritual war that rages in our own lives through our personal temptations and sins while believing the lie that this same spiritual warfare does not takes place at a global level as well. We no longer accept a place for the global struggle between the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and the god of this world. As long as we remain blind to this truth, we will be ineffectual in overcoming Satan.
  2. Once we accept that the battle is being waged, then we must pray fervently for Satan to bound and the people he has deluded (the Muslims) to be freed from their bondage. They have bought the lie that they are following God. Most of these people are good-hearted and kind. They desire nothing more than to live a right life and just don't understand that they have been deceived.
  3. The best way to achieve this freedom is to change the hearts and minds of the Muslims with the Gospel of Jesus. This may mean being a missionary or supporting one. We need lots and lots of ground troops (missionaries) once again walking the roads of Peter and Paul.
  4. We must vote for a man who has been placed by God in the perfect position to lead His battle against Satan. Many Christians do not see the moral obligation they have for voting. God has given us the power to choose who our leader will be. God will let us make bad choices (and let us live with the consequences of those choices) about who are national and political leaders are (see the story of Samuel anointing Saul as King).

Wake up, O sleeper! Two towers crumbled to the ground. A train exploded. A school was hijacked. Our enemy is active. Shall we continue to live in oblivion or will we put on the full armor of God and march forward with such vengance that the gates of Hades do indeed shudder?

Dick Morris Awed by Bush's Speech

Dick Morris, former Chief Strategist for President Clinton and arguably the most brilliant political strategist this country has ever seen, is in awe of Bush's acceptance speech. I would recommend you read Morris' analysis of the speech. Here are some quotes from the analysis:"In a speech that was at once eloquent and substantive, sensitive and dynamic, profound and familiar, Bush has risen to a level few presidents have ever reached."
"Summoning a poetry unusual in American politicians and unique among those who now run for office, Bush reached into each of our souls and brought forth an emotional response that only a glorious speech could summon."
"I used to back Bush because he offered safety; now I support him because he summons us all to an ideal. Before he spoke, supporting Bush was a duty one owed to the fallen. Now, it is an honor."

Morning Traffic Report

I live outside the bustling metropolis (I know, I know...metaphor alert) of Montgomery, AL (201,500 people). Like most cities our morning DJ's give traffic reports. I've always found this odd because there really very, very few "alternate routes" to take if traffic gets jammed up. This morning, though, I heard the best traffic report. It seems one of the secondary arteries coming into the city was completely stopped because a herd of cattle (yes, an entire herd) had broken out of a fence and was on the road. Only in the south...
